We achieved permission for an extension to an existing fruit packing building within the Green Belt with a new access. The applicants needed to accommodate machinery required for a flow wrap unit to comply with the standards of the supermarkets who purchase the 2,000 tonnes of apples produced. Unless standards and expectations of the supermarket are met there is no commitment to the grower who has no option but to comply with demands for fruit quality, wrapping and presentation.

Working with the client, The RPP concluded this was the only feasible solution without developing a completely new building on the adjoining farmland which would involve a far greater level of investment, as well as taking up a greenfield site.

The development of the extension means the existing access to the yard had to be relocated, with the Highway Engineer concluding that the access would be safer, being engineered to current standards.
